Imperial City

Beijing is the nations' capital and the political and cultural center. It's endowed with rare cultural heritage due to its long history. The Great Wall, one of the great wonders of the world is the sole man made structure that can be seen from space, extends several hundred miles from Beijing well into the depths of the Gobi desert. The northern suburbs of the city are home to the poetic and picturesque Summer Palace, recently refurbished, a grand retreat from the city's notorious summer heat.

In the heart of the city lies the Forbidden City, one of the most splendid of all imperial palaces; just beside it is the Temple of Heaven which was the place of worship for emperors of various dynasties. Also be sure not to miss the Hutongs, or courtyard; these old laneways and traditional buildings have been a centre of history and culture in the city for generations.

Beijing's climate is quite extreme. It can get very cold in winter , well below 0°C, and quite hot in summer up to 35ºC. The best seasons for visiting are spring and autumn, when the weather is milder and the air is dry.
